Ireland were pushed hard as they recorded a 34-20 victory over a spirited Italy in Rome to keep their Grand Slam bid on track. Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent in a high-tempo first half, which ended 24-17 in Ireland's favour. Tries for James Ryan, Hugo Keenan, Bundee Aki and Mack Hansen saw the visitors secure a bonus point before the break. The home side kept in touch with tries from Stephen Varney and Pierre Bruno. After the break, Italy were first to score through a Paolo Garbisi penalty kick, which brought them to within four points of Ireland. Ireland struggled to break the Italian defence and failed to score any points in the third quarter. Going into the final quarter, Ross Byrne struck a penalty kick to restore a 7-point lead for Ireland.
